About 18-24 thousand tons of waste batteries are formed in Kazakhstan annually. The main types of rechargeable batteries used in the Republic of Kazakhstan are lead, nickel and lithium. According to the type of load, they are divided into starter, traction, stationary and portable batteries. Starter batteries are mainly used to start internal combustion engines. Almost all car batteries are lead acid. Lead, cadmium, lithium, sulfuric acid, an alkaline solution of potassium hydroxide in terms of the degree of impact on the human body are classified as hazard class 1 (GOST 17.4.1.02-83) and are one of the significant sources of environmental pollution. Decomposition in the natural environment has an extremely long life span. In this regard, the disposal of batteries with the aim of reusing them is of great importance.
Since December 2016, the EPR Operator has been making compensation payments to Kazakhstani enterprises providing services for the collection, transportation and processing of waste batteries. The amount of payments depends on the amount of waste collected and processed. These measures are aimed at supporting, stimulating business in creation of new capacities and further development of the processing industry in Kazakhstan.
VOLUMES OF COLLECTION, PROCESSING AND DISPOSAL OF WASTE BATTERIES
At the end of 2016, the volume of collection and processing of waste batteries amounted to 19,284 tons, in 2017 – 20 thousand tons, in 2018 – 20 thousand tons, following the results of 9 months of 2020 -10,314 tons.
The Operator ensures the disposal of 95% of the waste batteries. An enterprise with a full cycle of processing of waste batteries in the Republic of Kazakhstan is Kainar-AKB LLP, Taldykorgan, Almaty region. The processing capacity of the enterprise is more than 30,000 tons of waste batteries per year.
