Ensuring the carrying out of educational, advertising, motivating and promotional events for separate RSW collection
1. Carrying out of the action "Junk from A to Z"
The educational project "Junk from A to Z” was launched at the initiative of the EPR Operator in 2017. Within the framework of this event, schoolchildren and students are shown the capacities of waste processing enterprises, as well as points of reception of secondary raw materials and old cars. Excursion programs were organized in Nur-Sultan city and the Karaganda region. Schoolchildren are shown the sorting line, how valuable components in the form of plastic, glass, paper, metal are selected from the total mass of waste for further processing. The children are also introduced to the technologies for processing the residential solid waste, demonstrated the pyrolysis and production workshops.
Thanks to the educational project, the children had the opportunity to trace the “path” of the residential solid waste from the garbage can to the processing enterprise, right up to the receipt of finished raw materials. The EPR Operator LLP together with the Education Department of Nur-Sultan city and the Waste Processing Plant in 2020 continued the educational excursion events “Junk from A to Z”. The employees of the plant showed the whole process from unloading waste to finished products, which were obtained as a result of processing. The guides showed the schoolchildren the waste sorting process, where plant employees manually separate plastic, bags and other types of waste. The process of how plastic bags and plastic bottles were turned into granules and then sent to specialized enterprises to receive products made of secondary raw materials was fully shown and described. In total, from January to February 25, 2020, 54 trips to the Waste Processing Plant were organized.
During the period of restrictive measures caused by the spread of the coronavirus infection COVID-19, the format of this project was changed, the excursions were transferred to the online format.
2. “Throw into yellow” action in the Khan-Shatyr shopping and recreation center
Organization of the “Throw into yellow” action. More than 20 secondary educational institutions of the capital, students of higher educational institutions of the city, environmental organizations of Kazakhstan, the public and other initiative groups took part in the action.
Within the framework of this action, the first mobile mini-plant for the processing of RSW in Kazakhstan was demonstrated to the residents of Nur-Sultan (the Ecotrack project), original master classes were held on the design of eco-bags, making souvenirs made of RSW, creative teams of the city presented their best performances and much more.
Also, representatives of the Ministry of Ecology, the city Akimat, Mats Foyer, Swedish Ambassador to the Republic of Kazakhstan, representatives of UNDP, public associations, eco-activists, schoolchildren and students took part in the large-scale “Throw into yellow” environmental action aimed at creating an environmental culture of the population.
3. Information campaign “Throw into yellow”
In January, the second wave of the information campaign “Throw into yellow” was launched in cooperation with the Akimat of Nur-Sultan. Updated outdoor advertising with the slogan “Throw into yellow” was placed at 50 stops and 20 billboards. Free rotation of social videos has been launched at the Nur-Sultan international airport, the Shaplin cinema network, Eurasia shopping and entertainment center, Khan Shatyr shopping and recreation center, and city LED screens. The branding of the garbage truck was carried out and promotions were carried out in the residential complex. As part of this campaign, the #Throw into yellow! internet challenge was launched. The best educational organization in the junior category promoting environmental initiatives was the Koshakan kindergarten. The kids and their parents were among the first to join the challenge and make about 20 mini-videos on how to organize separate collection of waste at the apartment and what needs to be sent #Vпереработку.
4. Environmental marathon in online format
An environmental marathon has started at schools in Nur-Sultan. The project was organized by the Nur-Sultan Education Department, the EPR Operator with the support of the Modernization Center of Nur-Sultan city, the Clean city NC garbage collection company and the Zhas Ulan volunteer movement.
During a month, environmental lessons on the topic of separate collection of the residential solid waste are organized for primary school pupils. Education for schoolchildren is carried out in a playful and online format by leaders of the environmental movement.
At eco-lessons, children were taught the basics of ecological culture, sorting of processing waste at home, as well as the benefits of separate collection for the environment. Five-minute play sessions in the classrooms and the broadcast of an animation video about garbage processing were organized. In total, 87 schools, 95 kindergartens, 32 colleges took part and more than 1980 teachers were trained.
5. Information support “Separate collection in the Botanical garden”
As part of the installation of containers in the Botanical Garden of Nur-Sultan, information and educational work was carried out. A press release was prepared “Containers for collecting secondary raw materials were installed in the capital’s park”, coverage of this event in the media was organized and explanatory work was carried out. In total, over 30 metal structures were installed in the park to collect second raw materials. New containers are yellow, in the form of a plastic bottle, and for the convenience of the townspeople, instructions for separate collection are applied to the containers. The first master classes on waste sorting, near the new containers, were held by the participants of the “Throw into yellow!” project. Volunteers in a playful way showed which bottles should be thrown into new containers, and also talked about the advantages of separate collection of RSW.
6. Contest for creation of character Vпереработку!
On September 1, the results of the creative contest for creation of character #Vпереработку were announced. A total of 168 creative works were submitted for the contest. Choosing the best was not an easy task. Participants from all regions of Kazakhstan sent dozens of different interesting works for consideration by the jury. Each presented their own vision of the character Vпереработку, which will symbolize the industry of collection, processing and disposal of waste. The selection of finalists took place in several stages. Of the 168 works, 67 works were selected for the second round by the experts. The creative works of the participants were evaluated by experts from the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources, the EPR Operator, UNDP Kazakhstan, representatives of specialized enterprises, Zhas Ulan Regional Public Organization NGO, Inaktus international organization, representatives of the embassies in the Republic of Kazakhstan, media representatives and parental committees. According to the voting results, 13 semi-finalists were determined. The jury of the contest, having studied the submitted works, chose the four best. Yellow container, Wonder girl, Teenager, and Eco hero received the most votes. The experts evaluated the creativity, detailing of the characters, artistic idea, and creative approach. Winners will receive large sets of sketching markers. Also, within the framework of the project for the preparation of a series of ecological fairy tales for children of preschool and primary school age, all 67 works selected by the jury for the semifinals will be used to illustrate this methodological manual!
7. “V переработку” action
This project consists of a set of activities, including training materials and practical actions. The geography of the project was expanded, Semey and Karaganda cities were connected. In March in Semey, young eco-volunteers held another campaign in support of the separate collection of the residential solid waste. Schoolchildren pasted plastic drinks bottles with special stickers “Throw into yellow”. The stickers contained information that after use, the plastic containers must be thrown into a container for processing waste. Master classes were held in the residential complex and training seminars on the basis of: Nur-Sultan: secondary schools №67, 66, 83, 77, 53, kindergartens 77, 95, 73, 63, 64; Temirtau: secondary schools 16, 14, 3, kindergarten 12; Semey: secondary schools No. 3, 37, 4, kindergarten No. 33, colleges.
As part of these activities, the preparation and launch of a methodological room for children of primary school age was carried out. Educators of kindergartens No. 77, 95, 63 prepared versions of performances-classes (for different age groups) for children and parents, who disclosed not only the topic of separate collection of RSW, but also the possibilities of processing. In terms of preparing materials for the quest and methodological modules, the following work was carried out: quests with a total of 17,000 participants carried out. In partnership with the Zhas Ulan Regional Public Organization, an EcoAlem quest - 87 schools of the city, as well as a republican championship with the participation of 17 regions of the country were organized.
8. Launch of the EcoAsar project
This large-scale educational project includes a set of activities: Eco-hours for primary school children with the participation of the “Eka! Clowns” project, class hours using video materials prepared by the EPR Operator LLP, webinars for volunteers and the start of the EcoAsar action in the courtyards of houses with the participation of the leaders of Zhas Ulan, collection of secondary raw materials for charitable purposes. For three weeks, the EPR Operator organized 2,383 environmental lessons for educational institutions on the topic of separate collection of the residential solid waste, in which more than 140 thousand children took part. Mentors carried out systematic training for 2,148 volunteers in the basics of ecological culture, proper sorting of the residential solid waste and its benefits for the environment. Also, within the framework of EcoAsar, schools and kindergartens announced a charitable collection of secondary raw materials in support of children from low-income families and a shelter for homeless animals. Thanks to the active participation of 80 educational institutions in the eco-marathon, it is managed to collect and deliver for further processing 36,965 kg of secondary raw materials in the amount of 1 million 33 thousand KZT. At the expense of the proceeds from the delivery of secondary raw materials, 6 notebook computers were bought for children from low-income families and over 1,200 kg of feed were handed over to the city shelter for homeless animals. Also, the companies that supported EcoAsar purchased 6 additional notebook computers. In total, 12 units of computer equipment were handed over to children. On November 16, the second stage of the EcoAsar marathon was launched and the project was replicated in Semey, Karaganda and Temirtau. According to preliminary results, within the framework of EcoAsar - Marathon of good deeds! about 21 tons of secondary raw materials collected. Total: 319,964 children were involved in EcoAsar activities. In a breakdown: grades 1-4 - 121,031 pupils, grades 5-11 - 154,736 schoolchildren and kindergartens - 44,197. 13,650 families from Nur-Sultan, Karaganda and Semey took part in the Ekoshyrsha contest. Life hacks on plastic – 7,867 families.
9. Creation and release of materials on environmental education and promotion of separate RSW collection
Within the framework of this direction, work to control, adjust and release specialized publications was carried out. A series of eco-fairy tales “The Adventure of Grineyks” was prepared on the basis of the idea of Askar Mukanov, the primary school teacher of the school-gymnasium No.83. Irina Khvan, the illustrator became the winner of the contest among artists, which was held with the support of the EPR Operator LLP.
This album consists of 5 independent eco-fairy tales, the active participants of which are the little people of the magical city “Tazakala”. Greeneyks have their own miraculous abilities and help in solving environmental problems that arise in the life of a child and his family: they teach the correct sorting of the RSW, help in cleaning up coastal areas, support the promotion of green ecological transport, stop unauthorized felling of trees, support the movement aimed at processing of old household appliances, cars.
The EPR Operator supported the initiative of primary school teachers, who prepared an album of the best 46 integrated lessons, which are currently integrated into the educational process of primary school.
As well as the initiative of kindergartens in Nur-Sultan in the creation of creative children's zones, a laboratory of Grineyks, the Eco-Shyrsha initiative, Eco-fathers - fine fellows, RSW games for the whole family, Eco-essays on separate RSW collection and much more.
In order to form the leadership and creative potential of children and youth, the initiative of the creative team “People's Theater Rovesnik” was supported, which, on the basis of this album of fairy tales, prepares a mini-performance with the participation of children of the school-gymnasium No.83 “Eco-Adventures of Greeneyks”, which will be shown on the day of the presentation of the album of eco-tales. Circulation -150 albums (5 books each). Proposals for promotion of the project within the framework of educational initiatives:
- continuation of the preparation of a series of new fairy tales
- preparation of animated films
- preparation of audio fairy tales for babies
- replication and creation of new RSW games
- product branding (merchandising)
Graphic novel "Born to Dream"
The first social eco-graphic novel “Born to Dream” was supported by the EPR Operator as part of the platform developed to promote the environmental culture of Kazakhstanis.
One of the platform’s priorities is to work with youth, talented authors, one of which is Agafonova Yeva, a 2nd year student of the Linguistic College, a talented girl who was able not only to write a social novel, but also to prepare it in the format of an eco-graphic novel reflecting the most important issues - intrafamily relations between adults and children, the transition from positions of misunderstanding of each other to the choice of a sustainable path in the joint solution of environmental issues for the sake of sustainability and mutual understanding.
Work on the creation of a social eco-graphic novel was carried out for 1.5 years. It was a creative process, which was accompanied by a large number of meetings with teenagers, parents, representatives of recycling industries.
The presentation of the publications will take place on December 25 on the basis of schools No. 83 and 28 in Nur-Sultan online. Circulation: 500 copies.
10. Starting of the volunteer movement
In this area, with the involvement of eco-ambassadors and trainers, more than 900 volunteers were trained and took part. The forms of volunteer participation were different:
- carrying out of master classes with primary school children;
- carrying out game quests in the residential complex;
- organization of bike rides in park areas with an explanation of the topic of separate RSW collection;
- carrying out of educational explanations for residents in apartment owners’ cooperative, for the adult population;
- carrying out of educational explanations for residents in apartment owners’ cooperative, for the adult population.
As a result, more than 29,000 residents of the capital were informed about the topic of separate RSW collection. Tasks set within the framework of this work:
- To find out in apartment owners’ cooperative the number of residents and calculate the norms of the RSW in accordance with the approved standards (26 kg/month per person) of which 18.82 kg/person - a yellow container and 7.28 kg/person - green.
- To analyze the correctness of the separate RSW collection in one’s own family and from neighbors; to tell the family and neighbors how to properly sort the RSW at home and switch to separate collection of RSW together. The situation in 46 residential complexes of the capital was analyzed, more than 1,000 people were interviewed in Temirtau, 700 people in Semey.
