Zhasyl Damu JSC Participated in the Development of Carbon Markets and Nature-Based Solutions in Kazakhstan

Zhasyl Damu JSC took part in a two-day training workshop organized with the support of UNDP in Kazakhstan, jointly with the Forestry and Wildlife Committee of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, within the framework of the BIOFIN initiative.

The event aimed to build national capacity in carbon financing and the implementation of nature-based carbon projects.

More than 100 representatives from government bodies, the financial and private sectors, the scientific community, and carbon project developers participated in the training. Participants gained practical knowledge on current trends in carbon markets, international standards, and requirements for carbon offset projects, including baseline development, monitoring, reporting, and verification systems.

The workshop also discussed opportunities for developing carbon markets in Kazakhstan as an effective tool for attracting private investment into nature-based solutions, particularly in the forestry and agricultural sectors. Special attention was given to amendments to the Forest Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, developed under the BIOFIN initiative in cooperation with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, which create a legal framework for implementing carbon offset projects on lands of the State Forest Fund.

“Forest carbon offsets have significant potential in Kazakhstan, given the country’s natural resources and the relevance of the climate agenda. They can become an additional tool for fulfilling climate commitments while simultaneously increasing the investment attractiveness of forest projects. With a balanced approach, forest offsets can complement emission reduction measures without replacing them and contribute to the development of sustainable nature-based solutions,” noted Dana Kasenova, Director of Sectoral Competencies Department 2 at Zhasyl Damu JSC.

Participation in such events contributes to strengthening institutional and expert capacity in the design and implementation of carbon projects with a high level of environmental and social responsibility, which is a necessary condition for Kazakhstan’s effective participation in international carbon markets.
