As part of the international environmental exhibition ECO EXPO CENTRAL ASIA 2026, held at the Silk Road Samarkand International Exhibition Center, a regional dialogue was organized to discuss the activities of the Basel and Stockholm Convention Regional Centres, as well as the processes and priorities of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The event brought together representatives from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, including a delegation from JSC "Zhasyl Damu", along with Mr. Rolph Payet, Executive Secretary of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions.
A key topic of discussion was the prospect of establishing a Regional Centre for Central Asian countries, which could serve as an important platform for strengthening regional cooperation in environmental security and the sustainable management of chemicals and waste. Participants also reviewed the role of existing Basel and Stockholm Convention Regional Centres in supporting the implementation of international environmental commitments, facilitating knowledge exchange, and enhancing institutional capacities across the region.
Special attention was given to cooperation mechanisms with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), including funding priorities, project preparation procedures, and implementation timelines for programs aimed at addressing the region’s pressing environmental challenges.
Participants expressed their readiness to continue joint efforts in shaping the regional environmental agenda, strengthening partnerships with international organizations, and promoting initiatives that contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the improvement of environmental well-being across Central Asia.
